Magical Theory [locked to allies]

So it occurred to me that perhaps I should actually share what I've been up to. It's nothing huge, but getting some feedback might be useful.
I'm conducting some little experiments with magical principle. Or preparing to conduct them, at least. I have a schedule all worked out. Figured taking it one step at a time might just be a little more intelligent than jumping in head-first without even knowing what I was aiming at.
I'm not one of the Refs reknowned for that~
The first steps are to just get familiar with magic in different forms, hence learning Cure and Aero. The next three steps were to learn Water, then teach myself Fire out of a book, and then use that practice to learn Blizzard by altering Water. Just to see if I could do it.
However, I think I may shorten that a bit. The idea of using fire magic makes me a little nervous... Same with electricity. Since Yen Sid is occupied and I don't know of anyone else who teaches Water, I think I might try teaching myself that spell out of a book instead. I've been combing the libraries for months. I should have all the text I need. I don't even care if it takes longer than usual to learn, or if the spell turns out weaker than its supposed to be. I'm studying magical theory, not trying to catch up with the Uber-Refugees.
However, like I said, any snippets of advice from the more magically prowessed would be welcome.
If I manage the Water and Blizzard experiments, I want to learn Gravity and then try to reverse it to create a levitation spell. That's the last thing on my list so far...
((ooc: Modly ones, may I?))
